Avant by Justin Slee
30th March – 11th April 2015
A photography exhibition that is the result of a partnership between Leeds based photographer Justin Slee and the award winning dance company Northern Ballet.
Over the last few years the company has granted editorial and portrait photographer Justin Slee privileged access observing and recording the companies work, up close and personal. Allowing him time to witness the commitment, people and process behind creating outstanding visual dance productions.
The resulting images form the exhibtion titled Avant. A collection of photographs that illustrate the dedication, professionalism and endeavour of the world of modern ballet through contemporary documentary and portrait photography.
From our city centre location, The Gallery at Munro House exhibits and represents artists specialising in all types of art, including photography, illustration, painting, print, sculpture, animation, film, and graphic design.
Since opening in September 2011, our programme has included a diverse mix of work and ecclectic range of artists. Exhibitions have included artists and designers working in styles and media ranging from photography and illustration, to experimental installations, traditional painting, printmaking and sculpture; since it’s inception, the gallery’s focus has been to support local arts and culture while also bringing artists and their work to the city from further afield – this is a core value which inspired the creation of The Gallery and is at the heart of everything we do.
Alongside our rolling, month-by-month exhibition programme, The Gallery space is available to hire for exhibitions, corporate functions, launches, screenings, events, workshops and more.
The Gallery’s in-house café is an independent eat-in and take-away sandwich shop, espresso bar and kitchen specialising in ciabatta and focaccia sandwiches. Fully licensed, it also caters for events and functions at The Gallery.
The Gallery and Café are within Munro House, at the corner of York Street and Duke Street.
Built originally as a Victorian textile mill, the high ceilings create a light and airy space. Situated around the corner from BBC Yorkshire, The West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds College of Music, Northern Ballet, and Yorkshire Dance.
The building is within the area known as Quarry Hill; opposite the Leeds City Bus Station, just over the road from the viaduct carrying the East Coast line north from Leeds – look to the left as you pass and you’ll see us.
