Avant by Justin Slee

30 March - 15 April 2015

Avant is the result of an ongoing partnership between Leeds-based photographer Justin Slee and award-winning dance company, Northern Ballet.

The exhibition is a collection of behind-the-scenes photographs that illustrate the dedication, professionalism and endeavour of the world of modern ballet through contemporary documentary and portrait photography.

Over the past five years Northern Ballet has granted editorial and portrait photographer Justin Slee privileged backstage access to rehearsals; including the creation of some of the Company’s most recent work, performances in theatres and some of the work of the Academy of Northern Ballet and the Company’s Learning department.

Justin Slee is a portrait and documentary photographer working in the areas of editorial and commercial photography. His style has a strong design aesthetic with a clean composition.

As a former design graduate his eye is drawn to the unusual and to the detail. Having worked in visual image making for a large period of his career, he always looks to communicate a strong story and moment with his photography.

All works are for sale via the Avant Prints website.

Based in Leeds, he is available for assignment and has travelled all over the World.

For over the last 23 years he has worked and undertaken various editorial and commercial commissions for a wide range of clients including The Guardian, The Times, The Telegraph Group, Northern Ballet, Walkers Snacks, Leeds United, IPC Magazines, Channel 4, ITV, Sky TV and the University of Leeds.

Working with a variety of subjects and personalities he always aims to connect with his subject and their environment. His work draws from their energy to create a unique moment in time.

Thank You

“It has been a roller coaster ride over the last few months and a lot of hard work. To celebrate finally getting over the line I thought I would like to thank everyone involved. I would not have been able to do it on my own and I will always appreciate the hard work from the following talented people:”

“Ruth Burke Kennedy, Catherine Worthington, Martha Leebolt, David Nixon and all the staff and dancers at Northern Ballet, Ellie Andrews, [email protected] Munro House, Paul and JP, Journal, Andy and Matt, Hungry Sandwich, Lucy, Picture Plus, Mark and John CC Imaging, Claire Kitching Friends of HamDuke Studios, and finally my partner Jayne who has had to put up with me during the final editing and show production.”
