About the Gallery
Gallery Munro House (formerly Leeds Gallery) is an independent commercial art gallery in Leeds, West Yorkshire specialising in Photography, Illustration and Fine Art. With a focus that is both local and national the gallery’s aim is to support local arts and culture while also bringing artists and their work to the city from further afield.
Exhibitions are usually on a 2 to 4 week turnaround. Work is hung using a flexible cable and track-based system, allowing us to take the space back to a ‘white box’ relatively quickly – this is particularly useful for ‘pop-up’ exhibitions and events.
Since opening in September 2011 the gallery has exhibited an eclectic mix of styles and media from both established and emerging talents. Our first exhibition, Terry O’Neill: 50 Years at the Top, brought his iconic photographs to Leeds for the first time and Terry officially opened the gallery at the private view on 14th September.
Highlights of our first year included The Illustrators, the first ever Leeds Print Festival, our Yorkshire Artists series, a retrospective of Ronald Searle’s illustrations, Leeds Through a Lens, the 24th SUN awards and Excess all Areas, a celebration legendary Leeds club night Back to Basics and 20 years of its subversive flyer artwork.
Who we are
Gallery Munro House is run by Ellie and Matthew Andrews. They met at Central St. Martins College of Art and Design in 2002 while studying Theatre: Design for Performance.
With their background in spatial design and a keen interest in collecting art, the idea of opening an art gallery was one they’d had for some time. They finally started looking for a space in early 2010, with Matt in London and Ellie in Leeds, they concentrated on the cultural centres of London, Manchester and Leeds. When the opportunity came up in early 2011 to take a large corner of an old Victorian textile mill in Leeds City Centre, they decided this was the place to start. Among the first to occupy the building in a relatively up and coming part of Leeds, they’ve been an integral part of the regeneration of “East Leeds”.
Alongside the gallery, drawing on Ellie’s background in the catering industry, they simultaneously opened Café 164 in the unit next door.
They co-curate all shows at the gallery, in the past three years showing hundreds of artists over nearly 40 exhibitions.
Ellie is originally from Leeds, she worked for some time as a designer for Theatre and Film before moving into the catering industry.
She started Leeds Life Drawing in 2007, which she continues to run alongside occasional work as a freelance illustrator and workshops she teaches in design. The LLD sessions run every Wednesday and there are also special drawing events and courses throughout the year.
Matthew is a full-time, freelance graphic designer and web developer from London. Dividing his time between London and Leeds, he also works regularly as a photographer and illustrator.
